For Middle School Art Problems/Assignments I have the students assess their own work before they turn it in. There is a section for comments for the students and I to add any additional remarks. I found this gem today
This week I brought in a new "center" for the classroom. It is my hope that early finishers may weave on the Friendly Loom. Third grade tried it out today and it is clear I need to bring in the other loom I have, because they were beyond excited to use it. (The loom is a repurposed headboard, so I have the foot board also set up as a loom.)
Christ the Redeemer is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is 30 meters tall, not including its 8 meter pedestal, and its arms stretch 28 meters wide. The statue weighs 635 tons, and is located at the peak of the 700-meter Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. A symbol of Brazilian Christianity, the statue has become an icon for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone and was constructed between 1922 and 1931. VIDEO OF WORKERS REPAIRING CHRIST THE REDEEMER As we move away from the technical work of the color wheel and more towards observation and imaginative works, Middle School has begun daily drills/warmups. We do this to get the blood pumping to the right side of their brains. I explained that a vocalist or an athlete would not perform without warming up. A ritual like drawing warmups is essential for tapping into the right side of the brain especially at the middle school age. p.s. We will be doing our warmups on blank index cards. I'm hoping to put an FYI in the next bulletin. Question the beauty of the earth, the beauty of the sea, the beauty of the wide air around you, the beauty of the sky; question the order of the stars, the sun whose brightness lights the days, the moon whose splendor softens the gloom of night; question the living creatures that move in the waters, that roam upon the earth, that fly through the air; the spirit that lies hidden, the matter that is manifest; the visible things that are ruled, the invisible things that rule them; question all these. They will answer you: "Behold and see, we are beautiful." Their beauty is their confession to God. Who made these beautiful changing things, if not one who is beautiful and changeth not?
